The Tour d’Khatulistiwa cycling festival, which aims to promote sport and local tourism in West Kalimantan, is expected to become an annual event.
“Apart from being a way of developing the sport, the event is a celebration of religion, as well as a promotion of local tourism and the creative economy. Hopefully, we can hold it annually,” said Coordinating People’s Welfare Minister Agung Laksono at the end of the Pontianak City Road Race on Friday afternoon.
The two-day event was held to coincide with the Chinese Cap Go Meh festivities, observed 15 days after Chinese New Year (Imlek).
“The people here look excited about the event. We may look into the possibility of holding it at night,” he said.
The opening day of the two-day event featured the City Road Race, which comprised five categories: the men’s Master C (over 50 years of age) Master B (40-49), Master A (30-39), Expert (former athletes around the age of 50) and the men’s Elite (athletes and those over the age of 17).
Over 100 participants, some coming from neighboring Malaysia, took part in the City Road Race, which was officially commenced by Youth and Sports Minister Roy Suryo and West Kalimantan Governor Cornelis.
“This event is unique because it is held at the trade center. Never before has a region ever held such an event,” Roy said.
On Saturday, the Singkawang Endurance Challenge was held, featuring 300 participants, including those from Germany and China, according to the organizers.
